Tips for Keeping Your Golden Retriever Healthy and Happy

If you get your Golden Retriever when he is a puppy, it will take some time for his immune system to become mature. During this time, he will be more susceptible to illness and disease, and it is your job as a pet owner to make certain you do everything you can to keep him healthy. One of the most important factors in building up your Golden Retriever’s immune system has to do with the food that you feed him.

Check with your vet to find out what his recommendations are, and you can also do some research on your own. Many breeders suggest that you should feed your Golden a mixture of food that you make at home, and commercial puppy food, which will help his immune system develop much faster. When you make food at home, you can control what the ingredients are, to make certain that you are providing your Golden with the essential vitamins and minerals that he needs. They also recommend that you give your Golden bottled water, rather than tap water as well, since it is purer than the water coming though your tap.

To help your Golden build up strong teeth, they suggest that for a treat, you give him raw bones that still have meat on them. By giving him at least one bone each day, he will build up his chewing muscles, as well as boost the strength of his teeth. Chew toys are also important for this purpose. Whatever you give your Golden, your top priority should be his safety, so make certain that you choose wisely.

If you have never before owned a Golden Retriever, it would be a good idea to do some research on the breed, and become familiar with common ailments that they could suffer from. This way, you can be on the lookout for potential warning signs, and seek care immediately, before the problem has time to worsen.

Unless you plan on breeding, it is a good idea to have your male Golden Retriever neutered. Male Golden Retriever’s are prone to problems with their reproductive system, which is why this is a good idea. The earlier you have it done, the better off your Golden will be.

Part of being a responsible owner of a Golden Retriever is ensuring his health, and that is something that you should take seriously. The better care that you provide, the longer your pet will remain a healthy, happy part of the family. If you suspect a problem, seek veterinary care right away. Ignoring smaller issues can lead to much more serious health problems, which could greatly impact the quality of your Golden Retriever’s life. The money spent on veterinary care is well worth having a healthy, happy pet, and if you don’t feel that way, then you should think about placing your Golden with a family or owner who does.
